Angel numbers and what they mean
The repeating numbers people keep seeing, and what each one is said to carry.
Angel numbers are repeating digits people notice and read as a message: 111 on a clock, 444 on a receipt, 1212 on a parking meter. The meanings come out of numerology, where each digit carries a quality and repeating it turns the volume up. The name comes from the 2000s, mostly from the writer Doreen Virtue, though the underlying number-symbolism is a great deal older.
None of it is evidence of anything, and it does not need to be. What follows is what the tradition says, laid out plainly so you can find your number and read what it is held to mean.

The blank page before anything is written on it. Zero is the circle with nothing inside and no end to it, so this one arrives when a chapter has emptied out and the next has not started yet. Nothing decided, nothing owed.

One is the first step and the first idea. Read as a green light: what you have been turning over is ready to be acted on, and what you keep thinking about is what you will end up building.

Two is the number of pairs, so this one is about the things that need another person or another season. The message is to hold the course rather than force it. Something is already in motion at a speed you do not control.

Three is mind, body and spirit lined up, and the sense of not being alone in the room. Traditionally the number of help arriving, and of something you have been quiet about asking to be said out loud.

Four is the square, the table with four legs, the thing that holds. This is the number of being accompanied and of ground that will take weight. It is also the one grieving people report seeing far more than any other.

Five is movement and it does not ask permission. Read as upheaval already under way rather than a choice being offered: the work is to let it happen instead of holding the old shape in place.

Not an ominous number in this tradition, whatever else it means elsewhere. Six is the domestic number, home and care and material worry, and three of them is a nudge that the balance has tipped too far toward fear or toward things.

Seven is the inward number, the one about knowing rather than doing. Read as confirmation: you are on the path you thought you were on, and the thing you worked out quietly by yourself was right.

Eight lying on its side is the infinity symbol, and the number is read as circulation: what went out comes back. Usually applied to money and effort, but the older sense is simply that nothing given is lost.

Nine is the last digit, so this is the number of the final page rather than the blank one. Read as permission to put something down: a role, a grudge, a version of yourself that the last few years used up.

Why they show up so often after a death
Two things are true at once here, and both are worth saying.
The first is ordinary and well described. Once a number matters to you, you start seeing it everywhere, because your attention has been retuned rather than because the world has changed. Psychologists call it the frequency illusion. Grief also leaves people scanning: for a smell, a song, a shape in a crowd, a number on a clock. The scanning is the point, not a fault in it.
The second is that this does not settle anything. Nobody can tell you whether the number on your receipt meant your mother. What can be said is that reading meaning into it is a normal thing for a grieving person to do, and it is close kin to talking to someone out loud after they have died: an ongoing relationship kept up in the only ways still available. Grief researchers have a name for that, continuing bonds, and it has been treated as healthy for decades.
If a number has been carrying something for you, it is doing a job. You do not need it to be verified to keep it.
The numbers that are not on this list
For most bereaved people, the number that keeps appearing is not 444 or 1111 at all. It is a birthday. A death date. A hospital room, a house number, a flight, a shirt they wore, an anniversary that lands twice a year for different reasons.
Those beat anything in the table above, because the meaning is not borrowed. Nobody had to assign it. If their date keeps turning up in front of you, that is your number, and it says the thing you already know it says.
