Losing a partner you were not married to
There was no ceremony making it official. There was still a whole life.
The hospital form asks for next of kin. There is a relationship field with a dropdown, and your name does not fit cleanly into any of the options. Spouse. Parent. Child. Sibling. You loved this person for eleven years, split rent with them, knew which side of the bed they slept on, and there is still no word for what you are to the hospital except visitor.
It keeps happening after that first form. The obituary lists survivors and somehow does not list you, or lists you last, after cousins you have never met. The funeral home calls the family to plan the service and does not call you. Someone's aunt asks, kindly, if you two were close.
What the paperwork doesn't have a box for
Marriage is a legal fact that hospitals, banks and courts can check against a database. A relationship is not, no matter how long it lasted or how completely it organised your life. So the systems default to the people who can prove it on paper: parents, siblings, a spouse. If you were not married, you may not be listed as next of kin, may not be consulted about decisions, may not be told anything at all unless someone else chooses to tell you. None of that is a verdict on what you had. It is a filing cabinet, and filing cabinets are not built for love.
Grief that has to explain itself first
Married grief gets to walk in the door. People know where to stand, what to say, how long the leave from work should be. Yours has to be introduced. You end up stating how long you were together as a kind of credential, proving the loss before anyone will treat it as real, which is an exhausting thing to do while you are also doing the actual grieving.
Some people will understand instantly. Others will ask, without meaning any cruelty, whether you're doing okay, in the tone they'd use for a friend's breakup. You are not required to correct them. You are also not required to accept the smaller version of the story they've told themselves.
What you lost does not depend on a certificate
You know what the relationship was. You know what got built in that apartment, that routine, that decade or those two years, whatever the length turned out to be. A Wind Phone doesn't ask for documentation. There is no form on the line. You can say their name into it exactly the way you would have said it out loud to them, and it counts the same as anyone else's call. Other pieces here cover other kinds of missing, and the story of how this whole thing started is there too, but none of it requires you to prove anything first.
Say what you need to say. The line is connected to nothing: no one hears you, nothing is recorded, nothing is stored.
